UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has lashed out at the Rajapaksa administration for its failure to take tangible action to prevent abductions.

In a statement issued yesterday, Wickremesinghe said that the Opposition was deeply concerned about the recent disappearance of Premakumar Gunaratnam and Dimuthu Attygalle of the Frontline Socialist Party, formed by JVP dissidents.

He alleged that continuing disappearances in spite of the conclusion of the conflict in may 2009 proved deterioration of law and order and the UPFA’s failure to tackle the situation.According to him, there have been 56 cases of disappearances so far this year. Of them 19 were reported during the 19th sessions of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva.

The UNP leader accused the government of bringing the country into disrepute by allowing abductions of not only political party activists and journalists but political party leaders, too.
