Gunaratnam affair: JVP too points finger at govt.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath yesterday accused the government of resorting to anti-democratic conspiracies to suppress peaceful political campaigns of the opposition parties. If the government was not responsible for the abduction of Kumara Gunaratnam and Dimuthu Attygalle, it should investigate the case and bring the culprits to book forthwith.


If the government would not probe the abduction of Gunaratnam and Attygalle, the JVP would have to come to the conclusion that the government was entirely responsible for the abduction, Herath told a media conference held at JVP head office at Pelawatta, Battaramulla yesterday.


Herath said that in the past several media organizations had been attacked. During the last few months 29 abductions had taken place. It was a great blow to the democracy of the country. " Kumara Gunaratnam and Dimuthu Attygalle have every right to form a political party. It is a democratic right. The government has been trying to suppress the Opposition political activities. All political parties must get together to rally under one flag to fight against anti-democratic activities of the government, " Herath stressed.


When asked whether Gunaratnam and Attygalle were abducted to root out the activities of the new Frontline Socialist Party, to form a grand opposition political alliance, JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the JVP was of the opinion that they were abducted not to destroy the activities of the proposed alliance. It was a mystery. The JVP was of the view that the abduction was a continuation of undemocratic act.


MP Dissanayake said that if Gunaratnam and Attygalle had been taken into custody by the government, it should release them immediately. Otherwise the JVP would have to believe that the government had purposely abducted the duo.


MP Dissanayake added that the CID and the police had the capability to solve any crime, but since the government was involved in murders, abductions, disappearances and suppressions of opposition political activists, those organizations were helpless. was the order of the day in Sri Lanka," he said.
