The newly formed Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) yesterday alleged that the government had abducted four of its members recently. It added that the abductions of political activists and media personnel who oppose the government were on the increase.
Senadhira Gunatillake, a key member of the JVP splinter group and General Secretary of the new party, delivering the keynote address at its inaugural convention at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium said that there had been 59 disappearances of political opponents and journalists during the last six months.
He said there was a need to mobilise the masses to defeat the neo-liberal capitalist elements in the government and bring in a transformation in society.
Gunatillake said that the government by abducting those who speak against it was attempting to create a fear psy
chosis so as to make people choose to be silent whatever happened to the country.
But the new party party had proved that those in power were wrong with the participation of large numbers at its inaugural convention. Kugan, Lalith, Dimuthu and Gunaratnam had given the lead to their struggle, he said.
"They have shown us how different the struggle ahead will be," Gunatillake added.
He said the need of the hour was to re-organise ourselves notwithstanding race, colour or creed and fight back to make it clear to the government that they were not mere political pushovers, their members would not give in to it and they were prepared to carry out their struggle until the repressive forces were defeated.
"The time has come for all left parties to unite and fight these forces and bring in a transformation and the forming of our party is the stepping stone," Gunatillake said.
Rohana Wijeweera had launched a struggle to change the then political system in 1971, but he could not go forward and again he failed in the late 1980s. Similarly, the LSSP which saw its birth in 1935 had emerged as a formidable political force in Asia bringing together all the leftist elements, but it was in disarray, Gunatillake said.
"We have to learn from these mistakes and continue our struggle to achieve our goals," the General Secretary stressed.
