Eight archaeological sites in the North have been selected under a special program launched by the Archaeological Department in line with the 180 day accelerated development program Uthuru Vasanthaya master development drive of the North , Director General of Archeology, Dr. Senarath Dissanayake told the Daily News.

He said most of the archaeological sites in the North had not been damaged. But some sites including the Jaffna Fort and Nilaveli Catholic Church (Dutch period) had been damaged due to terrorist activities.

Archaeology workshop

A two-day workshop organized by the Archaeology Department will commence today 9.00 am at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute under the patronage of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardane.
The objective is to share the experiences and results of stakeholders in the Archaeology field.

The Department is keen to restore all these archaeological sites and monuments without harming their archaeological value," he said.

Dissanayake said 10,000 historical and cultural heritage sites will be conserved under the Uruma Aruna program.

Staff for the northern sites have been appointed as an initial measure to intensify the excavation and exploration activities, he said.

The Archaeological Department needs specially trained officers for research activities and very skilled workers for excavation work. Since the Department is fully depended on Treasury allocation, the activities of the Department had to be carried out through the selected sites only.

But the department had been engaged in certain projects the request of State organizations and the Department was able to complete them successfully, Dissanayake said.
