79 charges of corruption against ministers: UNP

By Yohan Perera

The main opposition UNP said yesterday there were more than 1,400 charges of corruption against various government officials and 79 of them were against ministers.

Western Provincial Council opposition leader Rosy Senanayake told a news conference the clean-up of corruption should start from cabinet level.

She expressed these views against the backdrop of Minister Rajitha Senaratne having said that corruption in all sectors would be cleaned up soon.

“The reports on corruption clearly say that some Ministers are charged with corruption and therefore they should be dealt with for a start,” she said.

Ms. Senanayake revealing more details on instances of corruption said the most corrupt sector today was education while the police came next.

She said the Colombo Municipal Council was one of the most corrupt institutions in the country and charged that the CMC was still struggling to solve the garbage disposal issue in the city.

She urged the government to dissolve the CMC and call for an election so that people could install a fresh administration.

Ms Senanayake said the national question has to be resolved to avoid the ugly head of terrorism re-emerging while pointing out that a political solution should be worked out taking into consideration the multi ethnic and multi religious composition of the Sri Lankan population and stressed the need to resolve the economic crisis urgently without heaping more burdens on the people who are struggling to make ends meet.

She charged that a request for an office within the council premises had been turned down by the WPC authorities after her request for an office was approved by Governor Alavi Mowlana.
