After military victory gun culture is spreading: Thera

By Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk

Shastrawedi Ven. Mawarale Bhaddiya Thera of Kuppiyawatta Jayasekararama said that in the after the military victory in the North a gun culture is fast spreading in the country creating another social problem. Addressing a Ranaviru felicitation ceremony in Matara Ven. Thera said the escalating wave of crimes in the country is a direct outcome of the war and that immediate steps should be taken to bring it under control. The Ranaviru Felicitation Ceremony was organised by the Past Pupils Association of Rahula College 2003. Ven. Bhaddiya Thera further said “More than 23,000 security and police personnel died and 44,000 disabled. Today the country has thousands of widows of soldiers who died in action and children who lost their fathers. Many of the widows are in the prime of life. It is the duty of all those concerned to look into their grievances and to provide them relief. The people extended their whole hearted support to the government to end terrorism that ravaged the country for more than three decades. Many of us were worried about the time lost at the checkpoints. Our soldiers walked more than twenty miles a day at a stretch through hard terrain and waded through marshes. We must think about the sufferings of the disabled soldiers who lost their limbs, their vision. An effective plan to bring them relief is the need of the hour”
