A women’s grouping yesterday (09) accused the government of taking political activists and leaders of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), Premakumar Gunaratnam and Dimuthu Attygalle, into custody.

Attygalle and Gunarathne disappeared last Friday (06).

Gunaratnam was a key leader of the People’s Struggle Movement (PSM) and Attygalle the Secretary for Women’s and International affairs of the organization, which was a forerunner to the FSP.

The Women’s grouping has claimed that Gunaratnam and Attygalle were abducted by forces linked to the government.

Prior to their disappearance both activists had been preparing for the first conventions of the FSP, formed by a dissident group of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

Social Researcher Geethika Dharmasiri yesterday (09) told The Island that both Gunaratnam and Attygalle were believed to have been arrested by security authorities.

She said, "the present government is violating human rights. Although the war is finished people are still living in fear."

She also noted that this was not a normal arrest and said that the government had violated the women’s rights and was not allowing the country’s citizens to engage in politics.

"Attygalle and Gunarathnam had not done any wrong to society. They had acted against the violation of human rights by this Government including, disappearances, extra-judicial killings, illegal detentions and militarization in the North," she added.
