Fifty persons disappear in Jaffna within five weeks
2011-04-10
Complaints about the disappearance of 50 residents in the Jaffna District between the period of end February till end March have been reported to the Jaffna Police. The Police have recovered 12 dead bodies out of those disappeared.
People are disturbed at how the disappearances take place when there is one security officer for every 13 residents in Jaffna. While there are 670,000 persons living in the Jaffna District, there are over 50,000 security forces personnel and police officers assigned to the district.
A senior police officer said that several armed groups were responsible for the disappearances. Police Spokesperson SP Preshantha Jayakody said there was no truth in the statements being made about the disappearances and that there were no groups other than the security forces personnel operating in the district. When asked if the complaints received by the Jaffna Police about the disappearances were false, he evaded without responding saying he had to look into the matter.
