Human Rights Commission receives 3,000 complaints on missing persons
2010-08-19
A senior official at the Human Rights Commission said they had received over 3,000 complaints about missing persons in the North after May 19, 2009.
Complaints from the Northern Tamils amounting to 4,763 have been received by the Commission’s offices in Vavuniya, Mannar and Jaffna.
The official said there were complaints of forcible detention and arrests among those that have been made.
He said that many more complaints have not reached the Commission since persons in IDP camps are unable to meet with officials from the Commission and the officials in turn are not permitted into the camps.
