Welikanda detainees under mental stress
2010-08-08
Close to 3,500 detainees in three rehabilitation camps set for former LTTE members in the Polonnaruwa District are suffering from severe mental stress.
Although five detainees have tried to hang themselves to death recently, they had been rescued by security forces personnel. It is learnt that while these detainees are faced with a severe shortage of drinking water and medication, they are placed in 10x10 feet shacks.
TNA parliamentarians including Batticaloa District parliamentarian Pon.selvarajah have made a written request from the Defence Secretary to visit the three detention camps.
