No relaxation in coastal surveillance: Sinhala Navy
By Dianne Silva
The Navy reiterated yesterday that there has been no relaxation in surveillance along the coastline, responding to speculation that lax security had allowed five Tamil refugees, including three children, to travel to Tamil Nadu on Thursday. The asylum seekers had arrived at Mukundarayar Chathiram near Dhanushkodi in Tamil Nadu.
“There has been no reduction in patrolling and surveillance being carried out along the coastline,” Navy spokesperson Captain Athula Senarath told the Daily Mirror. He stated that the means through which these left the country could not be determined and investigations into the matter were continuing.
According to The Hindu the refugees had told the Indian police and intelligence agencies that they had boarded a boat at Talaimannar in Sri Lanka at 2 am and landed at Mukundarayar Chathiram at around 5 am. From there they had travelled to the Dhanushkodi police station. R. Vigitha, one of the refugees, said she had given her gold chain as a fee for ferrying her family to Tamil Nadu.
Vigitha had told the Hindu that there had been no problem in hiring a boat to India [though it was illegal], as the security agencies had relaxed their surveillance along the shore.
Asked about the reason for seeking asylum in Tamil Nadu, Vigitha said the police and other local agencies treated all Tamils with suspicion and things will never change in Sri Lanka.
