Controversial constable dies in prison

The Bambalapitiya police constable who was a suspect in the alleged brutal killing of a man of unsound mind by forced drowning, died yesterday morning of a heart attack at the Welikada Remand Prison an official said.
Prisons Commissioner Major General V.R. De Silva said the victim Dimuthu Sominas was in remand prison at Welikada when he passed away.
He was remanded together with three other suspects by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.
He surrendered to the police a day after the incident which was caught on camera and telecast on several television channels leading to a public outcry.
Police Chief Mahinda Balasuriya ordered the policemen involved in the alleged drowning of the mentally unbalanced man at the Bambalapitiya sea to be interdicted.
The OIC of the Bambalapitiya police station was also transferred subsequently.
The two officers including the victim who were in remand were also interdicted.
