A seven-year jail term was reduced to three-year imprisonment by the Court of Appeal on two police officers who were charged with torturing and committing cruelty to a woman whilst under police custody.

The two accused were Selvin Salay and Warnakulasuriya Stanley Shelton Thissera.
Earlier the Attorney General indicted the first accused Selvin Salay, who was the OIC, Crimes Division of the Narahenpita police and the second suspect, Warnakulasuriya Stanley Shelton Thissera a police officer attached to the Narahenpita police for torturing and committing cruelty.
The victim Angeline Roshana Michael had been taken into custody on December 3, 2000 and the accused had allegedly used force and tortured the victim to obtain facts relating to an alleged robbery.
Counsel Shanaka Ranasinghe appearing with P. Pathmasiri on behalf of the accused submitted that having regard and due consideration to the judgement of the Supreme Court in Case No. 3/2008, the Court of Appeal had the power to vary a sentence imposed by the High Court.
