Sri Lanka sees Solheim being partisan as facilitator


The Government says comments made by Norwegian Minister of Environment and International Development Erik Solheim to the Norwegian media over the controversial video which was aired on British television this week raises the possibility the former peace facilitator played a partisan role on the Sri Lankan issue.


The Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry, in a statement today, said it deeply regrets what it terms as baseless comments made by the Norwegian Minister against a friendly government adding that it is unbecoming of Minister Solheim to attribute blame on alleged atrocities, contained in an unsubstantiated video footage, without any recourse to an exchange of views and total disregard to the position of the Government of Sri Lanka on the issues in question.

“The criticism by him of a democratically elected Head of State, who is carrying out a vibrant agenda to safeguard the rights of the people of Sri Lanka, while having eliminated the scourge of terrorism, is unacceptable. It would be recalled that Norway continued its facilitatory role in the then peace process, even after the election of His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse. The utterances of Minister Solheim have led the Government of Sri Lanka to reflect on his possible partisanship in the facilitatory role,” the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry said.

The Government of Sri Lanka hopes that a formal response would be received from the Norwegian Government with regard to the attributed comments by a Minister of that Government. (ER)

He was never a honest facilitator of the so called peace process launched by "failed governments" of Sri Lanka prior to Mahinda Rajapaksa. Why is Prof Kulatunge not accepting the truth? Solheim is only calling for an investigation. When no journalists are not allowed to report on the war, the aftermath ie, the way the IDPs are treated; and the curb on the NGO's visiting the camps,all goes to tell that the Govt is obviously hiding something and lying about Ltte infiltration. Why can't the Prof. speak of the freedom to these innocent and deprived tamil civilians trapped within the barbed wire fence and also in the open prisons guarded by thousands of armed troops.The need of the day is to get rid of the racists.

Eric Solheim to Sri Lanka is like the top politician to Israel. We being Sinhalese always try to go against who go against us. But we have to realize that the outsiders do not look at our problems that way. We may support the Palestinian terrorists as they are being harassed by Israel.
