The President decided to cancel his intended visit to the US along with a jumbo contingent of 80 persons following a communication received by senior officials of the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry from the US embassy officials in Colombo that it would not be able to issue visas to all the delegates who had applied for a US visa.
The US embassy in Colombo had informed the Foreign Ministry that it could not issue visas to some delegates after considering their background and actions.
The President, who was to attend the UN General Assembly in New York next month, was to be
accompanied by former LTTE cadre and Minister Karuna Amman, JHU Minister Champika Ranawaka, NFF Leader Wimal Weerawansa and Presidential Advisor, Basil Rajapakse and many others.
According to diplomatic sources, the US embassy has had to deal with several legal issues in granting visas to some of the delegates.
The President decided to cancel the trip after realizing that the non issuance of a US visa to some of the delegates and possible legal action that could be instituted against some of the members once the delegation landed in the US would jeopardize his whole visit.
