The Sri Lankan Government confirmed yesterday that the relief items on board the ‘Captain Ali’ would be distributed to the IDPs through the Sri Lanka Red Cross.
The relief items which were being unloaded in Chennai at the moment would be handed over to the Indian Red Cross. The Indian Red Cross will thereafter hand the items over to the Sri Lankan Red Cross which would distribute the items through the District Secretary in Vavuniya; Mrs. Charles.
The exchange is believed to be a Red Cross to Red Cross one. However, the source noted that the relief items would not be limited to Vavuniya.
Instead the items would be distributed at welfare camps in the Jaffna, Mannar and Trincomalee districts.
A Spokesperson for Mercy Mission to Vanni the organizers of Captain Ali Arjunan Ethirveerasingam confirmed to the Daily Mirror on Monday that the items were being unloaded in Chennai and was being handed over to the Indian Red Cross.
The unloading began after a June 24th assurance by the Sri Lankan and Indian governments that the relief items would be routed through the Indian Red Cross to the camps in Sri Lanka.
The assurances were given after a meeting between the Indian External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna and a Lankan Delegation including Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga.
