Outbreak of chicken pox under control

A health ministry spokesman said yesterday it had been successful in combatted the outbreak of chickenpox in the IDP camps in the north. The number of cases is down from 12,000 cases of chickenpox reported in mid-June to 900.
Ministry spokesman W.M.D. Wanninayaka said “while the dengue epidemic is expected to continue until it declines after the monsoon rains, constant vigilance, protective measures and treatment at IDP camps contributed to bring the outbreak chickenpox under control quite dramatically”.
The awareness progrmmes, especially the education given on the importance of maintaining a good personal hygiene has paid dividends. The result is all IDPs are aware how communicable diseases are spread he said.
Meanwhile, Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Director Dr. Anura Senanayaka said 28 patients have received treatment for the A H1N1 virus infection, commonly known as swine flu. Dr. Senanayaka said “presently 6 patients are receiving treatment at the IDH. Eight specimens taken from suspected A H1N1 patients have been sent to the Medical Research Institute (MRI) for confirmation up to yesterday he said.
Patients so far detected in Sri Lanka are among international travellers who have arrived in the country from Australia, Philippines and UK, he said.
