IDPs should be rehabilitated not confined to camps: JVP
By Yohan Perera
JVP yesterday called on the government not to use the displaced persons in the North to fulfill their political aspirations such as winning the local government election in the North and for the success in future presidential election.
JVP MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake told a news conference yesterday that the government would very well use these persons to win future elections without allowing them to express their own free will.
“They should not be confined to the camps but should be rehabilitated now as the war is nearing the end,” he said.
The party also called on the government to allow the civil organizations and other political parties who are genuine to help the IDPs.
Mr. Dissanayake explained that the three basic needs of the IDPs at the hour is counselling to correct their distressed minds, meeting their day to day needs and managing the camps effectively.
JVP MP said the party’s voluntary officers force ‘Rathu Balakaya’ is ready to play a role in helping out the displaced persons in the North.
Mr. Dissanayake said the members of the Rathu Balakaya are capable of handling the IDP camps effectively with their skills obtained through international training. He recalled that the Rathu Balakaya played a major role in helping the tsunami victims in 2004.
He said the party had sought permission from the Ministry of Defence and the Health authorities to deploy its officers to help in the IDP camps. In addition the party has already set up coordinating centres to collect essential items for the IDPs. The head quarters of the coordinating centre has already been opened at Anuradhapura.
