‘Mafia like situation’ in prisons – Prison’s Chief
By Jamila Najmuddin
Outgoing Prison’s Chief General Vajira Wijegunawardena alleged that certain prison officials are corrupt and are responsible for some of the illegal activities that are taking place in the prison system which is resulting in the creation of a “mafia like situation”.
General Wijegunawardena in an interview with the Daily Mirror said that while the Prison’s organization was not the ‘most corrupt’ in the country, it received a bad name due to these corrupt officers who were responsible for smuggling in illegal objects and mobile phones to the prisoners in exchange for money.
“This is a very big issue and it needs to be stopped. The biggest problem we face is that no one is willing to come out with the truth and identify the corrupt officers. It is difficult for us to identify who is honest and who is corrupt,” General Wijegunawardena said.
The General added that due to the mafia like environment now being built within the prison walls, a sense of fear had also been created due to which the honest officers were not able to carry out their duties.
“ If I go and raid the prisons today, I will find at least 40 mobile phones. Tomorrow morning if I go and raid. it again, the same prisoners will have new phones. This is all taking place because of the corrupt officers,” General Wijegunawardena said. Another major problem faced in the prisons is the problem of overcrowding due to which illegal businesses are taking place freely, the General said. “Because of this it is difficult to control the prisoners. I have requested to increase the number of prison guards by a further 1500. I have already received 750 officers,” the General said.
