SINHALA BUDDHIST MONK: TAMILS NEVER HARMED ME IN KILINOCHCHI DURING MY STAY(1971-2009)

Buddhist monk leaves Kilinochchi after 38 years

A Buddhist monk, who had resided in LTTE-held Kilinochchi for over 38 years, had arrived in Vavuniya yesterday, along with another Sinhalese, the Army said.
The 76-year-old Ven Gonapinuwila Wimalasara Thero had gone to Kilinochchi in 1971 as principal of the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Kilinochchi. After the school was closed in 1990 the monk had stayed on in an ‘Awasaya’ in Kilinochchi.

The monk had said that no one had harmed him during his stay and he had lived peaceably with the Tamil villagers in the area.

When the military captured Kilinochchi, the monk had moved to LTTE-held Kandawelai, just outside Kilinochchi. Later he had come to Vavuniya. A Sinhalese woman from Kilinochchi had also come to Vavuniya seeking military assistance.

The Army had taken all possible steps to provide basic facilities to the monk, who is now staying at a temple in Vavuniya, the military added.
