Rajapaksa regime heading to cruel dictatorship

The power of the judiciary is above all and the supremacy of the law should be enforced over social positions, said attorney Shiral Laktilake, Corruption Watch spokesman. By destroying the legislature and the judiciary, the executive of this country, just like Hitler set fire to Reichstag building in 1936, is heading towards a cruel dictatorship, he told the media in Rajagiriya today (Dec. 19th).
Commenting on the Supreme Court ruling on the petrol price, he also said, "Neither the legislature nor the executive can oppose a court ruling. The government's going against the SC ruling for the reduction of the petrol price amounts to a contempt of court."
Anyone who violates a court decision could be found guilty of contempt of court, and this amounts to a breach of Clause Four of the Constitution, he said.
Answering a question, Mr. Laktilake said a clash between the executive and the judiciary, similar to the recent one in Pakistan, could arise if the executive does not respect the judiciary.
To prevent such a situation, top officials in state administration should not given reasons for the judiciary to question their independence, he said, adding that this court ruling has prevented the 'creation of more Dr. Jayasundaras.'
