Military compelled to restrict shelter material to Wanni
The military said it is being compelled to restrict shelter materials into the Wanni as the LTTE could use it for military purposes against the security forces.
Military Spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said that shelter materials sent for civilians in the Wanni were being used by the LTTE to construct underground bunkers.
Roofing sheets, which have a very high demand to construct temporary homes for the displaced civilians in the north, were also used by the Tigers to construct LTTE camps in the jungles.
“Some materials which need to be urgently sent to the civilians are being used by the LTTE for their advantage. Even food which the Government sends is distributed amongst the Tigers. Therefore we send food and shelter materials according to the requirements sent to us by the Government Agents,” Brigadier Nanayakkara said.
He added that once a convoy carrying shelter material was sent into the LTTE-controlled areas by the Government, it was the Government Agents who handled the distribution, to prevent the material reaching the hands of the Tigers.
Mullaitivu Government Agent Emilda Sukumar, had earlier told the Daily Mirror civilians in the Wanni were in urgent need of shelter as an increasing number cross into the District each day to flee the intense fighting in Kilinochchi.
Ms. Sukumar said that currently, schools in Mullaitivu had been transformed into temporary shelters to accommodate those fleeing the fighting while many displaced people also continued to sleep under trees and on strawboard.
