The Tamil National Alliance (TNA), during the third round of talks with the government yesterday (18) asked the government to provide details of all Tamil political prisoners and steps being taken with regards to them, TNA MP Suresh Premachandran said.

The TNA delegation was led by its General Secretary Mavai Senathirajah at the talks. Mr. Premachandran told Daily Mirror that there were around 850 Tamil political prisoners held in various prisons throughout the country and said that they were promised by the government that they would release a list of the Tamil detainees held under military custody. “The government promised at the last meeting to release this list to us. However, it has still not materialized and as a result we took it up with them again at this meeting. The government agreed to come up with responses to all these requests as early as possible. As for Tamil political prisoners, they told us that they had to collect details from all the prisons to make it available to us,” he said.

The TNA had also reiterated its demand for the total dismantling of the High Security Zones for civilians to be resettled in those areas. The two sides will meet again on April 7 to discuss matters of immediate concern to the Tamil people, and on April 23 to discuss the contours of a political solution.

The TNA delegation also comprised MP M.A. Sumanthiran and Senior Counsel K. Kanag Iswaran, while the government delegation included External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Irrigation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardane.
