80% of the officials in Tamil areas are Sinhalese
2011-03-19
An official from the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has told a public awareness meeting at the Wellaweli Pradeshiya Sabha that most of the Tamil people are unable to solve their issues since 80% of the officials working in the Tamil areas are Sinhalese.
He said that the police officers assigned to the Women and Children's Desk at the police stations in the Wellaweli division are unable to communicate in Tamil and therefore, when a complaint is made by an abused person, it has to be first recorded in Tamil by an officer who can communicate in Tamil and later translated to Sinhalese.
