Jaffna Tamil registration 'continues'
TNA says the practise is not only illegal but reminiscent of Apartheid policies
Parliamentarians from the leading Tamil political party in Sri Lanka has petitioned to the Supreme Court alleging that the registration of civilians continues despite a pledge by the government to halt it.
Five Jaffna district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians including Mavai Senadhiraja in their petition say that the military is carrying out involuntary registrations in the northern districts of Jaffna and Kilinochchi.
TNA MP, MA Sumanthiran, in an earlier petition argued in the Supreme Court that the practise was not only illegal but also similar to measures adopted by South Africa's apartheid regime.
On the third of March, the TNA withdrew their petition on a pledge by the Attorney General to immediately stop the controversial practice.
The parliamentarians have now requested the Supreme Court to reconvene their withdrawn petition and conduct a hearing.
The complaint has been forwarded to the Chief Justice for further action, reports KS Udayakumar.
