Goods sent for Tamils held up in Colombo Tuesday, 15 March 2011 00:00
The Canadian based members of the Peoples Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) has expressed their strong displeasure on the issue of container loads of materials held at the Colombo port sent by their members to the victims of war.
The Canadian representatives of the PLOTE met the Deputy High Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Mission Karunaratne Paranawitharane on March 6 and discussed several issues affecting the Tamil people in Sri Lanka.
In a three hour meeting they had questioned how the Tamils can take the government’s appeal for the diaspora Tamils to participate in the development work seriously when such double standards are deliberately practiced by the officials.
They had dispatched clothes, books, toys, wheelers for the disabled victims bought in China, crutches and many other essential items in 2009 and these have been held at the port and their effort to release them has been denied by the officials.
The Deputy High Commissioner said there must have been mishandling of the issue and assured the members that action will be taken to release the goods to reach the affected people. (LG)
