The World Bank will provide a grant of Rs 100 million for the reconstruction of Telippalai and Uduvil for the resettlement of 3,000 IDP families in the High Security Zones surrounding the Palali military base, District Secretary for Jaffna K. Ganesh said.
The Deputy Director of the Jaffna Reawakening Project V. Visvalingam said the World Bank grant would also be used for the completion of the Valukkiaru drainage project, to prevent seawater from entering the settlement areas and to permit excess rain water to flow into the sea.
Following the completion of the initial projects at a cost of Rs 15 million, which was also provided by the World Bank, the Bank had consented to a further grant of Rs. 100 million to further improve the reconstructed areas. Under this project, action has been taken to construct a major irrigation scheme which would benefit 3,000 families to be resettled in 25 underdeveloped villages.
Funds are being allocated at Rs 6,000 per person in these villages and a sum of approximately between Rs 134 to 478 million is being allocated by the Government.
The Bank of Ceylon and other Commercial Banks have come forward to extend the limits of their loans from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 100,000 depending on their genuine needs.
The Programme is being managed by the Jaffna Reawakening Project for the time being and it will be handled by an independent project office from next month, Visvalingam said.
