“The course the army takes in future will differ drastically to that of the past. Military aid to civil authorities will take precedence over the routine matters handled by the army in future. Winning the hearts and minds of the population in the north and east and preventing the rise of terrorism in any from will be the main responsibilities of the Army."
The Army Chief said this while addressing a diploma awarding ceremony held at the Diyatalawa military academy on Saturday evening. He said the Sri Lanka Army has been recognized as one of the most efficient in the world and this has been proved to the world by winning the war against terrorism. "My main goal is to further develop and transform the Army into an academically sound professional outfit in the future," the army chief said.

Speaking to those who obtained diplomas, the Commander said, "The academic qualification you receive at the academy will open doors to you in the future. I am sure you all understand the importance of a recognized academic qualification. In our days, officers had to serve almost ten to fifteen years even to think of an opportunity of this nature. I hope the qualification conferred upon you will pave the way for a better future. Remember academic qualifications not only give you learning and knowledge but also increase your self esteem and confidence in discharging you duties militarily as well as socially."

Finally, the Army Chief said, " the war was won with great difficulty and with many lives lost and the transition to peace is going to be equally difficult and challenging, so you must get ready for it today."
