2009-11-09 | 10.30 PM
A senior official at the Sri Lankan embassy in Washington says it has been confirmed that Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had betrayed Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka. In order to prove the sole responsibility of the war against the LTTE was with General Fonseka, the Defence Secretary had reportedly handed in a special statement made by the General to Swarnavahini following the military victory.
The official further noted that the Defence Secretary and Minister Dullas Alahapperuma participated in the UN General Assembly as members of the Sri Lankan delegation in order to visit the US to renew their citizenships.
According to the official, since General Fonseka visited the US to renew his Green Card, he would not have had to face any difficulty had he arrived in the US for the purpose along with the same delegation as the Defence Secretary.
The official added that the US authorities were looking in to the respective roles played by the Defence Secretray, the Chief of Defecne Staff and even Minister Dullas Alahapperuma in the alleged war crimes committed by US citizens.

The President has informed Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe through a middle man to act with caution keeping in mind the democratic process in the country when promoting General Sarath Fonskea as he would take steps to arrest him and Wickremesinghe within 24 hours after assuming office as President. The middle man who had carried the message is close friend of both the President and the Opposition Leader.
The message had been delivered to the Opposition Leader moments before he left the country yesterday (8).
The President had informed this middle man to tell Ranil not to pave the way for the creation of a military government to resolve issues that may exist between them and had also asked to
inform the Opposition Leader of his intension to meet with him when he returned to the island from his Indian tour.
The Opposition Leader had in turn asked the person carrying the message if the country was presently not under a murderous dictatorial rule. However, he had not rejected the invitation by the President for a discussion.
