Displaced elders to be handed over
By Romesh Madusanaka
The security forces have taken steps to hand over more than 8400 displaced elderly persons over 60 years of age to their next of kin. Vavuniya Government Agent Mrs. P.S.H. Charles said about 5000 elderly IDPs have been released and the list of their names is on display at the District Secretariat and the Divisional Secretariats.
The government would inquire into the household economy of the next of kin to ascertain the position to maintain the elderly relatives before releasing them from the welfare centre. However, the security forces would carry on periodical checks on the living conditions of the individuals concerned.
Meanwhile, the government has taken steps to establish Homes for the Aged in Vavuniya and Mannar Districts to provide shelter for the displaced elderly persons without relatives.
