JHU wants Mosque removed April 24, 2012, 10:08 pm By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The Jathika Hela Urumaya has urged the government to remove the mosque, which is situated in Dambulla, a holy area exclusive to only Buddhists, as the Muslims had constructed it illegally. Addressing a press conference at the National Library Auditorium yesterday (24) Leader of the JHU Ven. Omalpe Sobitha said that law does not allow constructions of other religions within Buddhist sacred sites. According to the Sri Lankan Constitution Buddhism should be safeguarded and nourished. The President, through ministries, is ensuring that this task is fulfilled, he said. Agriculture, Agrarian Development, Irrigation, Livestock Production and Development, Trade and Environment Minister in Western Provincial Council, Udaya Gammanpila said that the relevant sections of the government should mediate and take necessary action. The Buddhist –Muslim relations in Sri Lanka was more than ten centuries old and this bond had hitherto not been broken despite 500 years of colonial rule, the post colonial period and beyond, Gammanpila said. He also added that the Buddhist–Muslim relationship was not built on opportunities or marriages of convenience but of sincere understanding and goodwill, time tested by centuries of coexistence. Sri Lanka is turning out to be a lawless country and a failed state, the JHU said. www island.lk
