The President has reprimanded Minister Jeevan Kuamartunge over the comment made by the minister’s brother in-law, former Western provincial Councilor Sagara Senaratne to the Divaina newspaper that the President and the Defence Secretary had intervened to secure his release after being abducted in a white van.

Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had also called Kumaratunge and asked him to warn his brother in-law to be careful in making comments or else he would have to face the consequences. The Defence Secretary has ordered Kuamartunge to ask his brother in-law not to make any comments to the media.

The Defence Secretary had called the IGP after reading Senaratne’s comment in the Divaina newspaper and has asked him to direct the Ja-ela police to ignore the statement made by Senaratne to the police and not to take any action on it.

Therefore, the police have stopped investigating into the Senaratne’s abduction that took place n the 26th night, near the Jubilee Post junction in Mirihana, Nugegoda.

Although the Defence Ministry tried to show that Senaratne was abducted to extort money, he has told the Divaina newspaper that Kuamartunge, the President and the Defence Secretary had intervened to secure his release. There are many contradictions in the statement. It could be true if his release was secured by the security forces.

There are doubts whether it was the President, Defence Secretary or one of their agents who had spoken to the abductors. It is a serious issue if the police have stopped the investigation following a directive by the Defence Secretary.

The fate of the other abducted person who was in the van as stated by Senaratne is also not known.
