They hurled stones at me, but hit the Buddha statue - Ranil
Wednesday, 21 December 2011 (Srilankamirror.COM) - Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says the mobs who hurled stones at him at Sirikotha on December 19 missed their target and hit the Buddha statue in front of the party headquarters building.
At a media briefing at his office yesterday (Dec. 20), he displayed one of the rocks, which he said was aimed at him, and said it was thrown by Keli Rajamahendran.
As a Christmas gift, it would be wrapped and sent back to my friend Keli, said Mr. Wickremesinghe, adding that his Sirasa and MTV channels continued to attack him.
Maubima and Rivira newspapers, state run newspapers and televisions too, attack the UNP, but none of them attacked Sirikotha, which the party considers sacred second only to the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
It was only Maharaja’s Sirasa that attacked Sirikotha, because they want to create hatred among the people against me and the UNP, an emotional UNP leader said.
Speaking further, he said that he would take the maximum possible measures under the powers vested in him against the mobs who carried out the attack.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said that the new term of the party office bearers begins on January 01 next year.
He added that he would not treat his unsuccessful challenger Karu Jayasuriya and his followers as enemies, but would obtain their contributions to build the party.
