End ‘state terrorism, suppression of people and media’- UNP Saturday, 27 August 2011 01:10
The main opposition UNP yesterday said it expected the government would act positively to end what it called ‘state terrorism, suppression of people and the media’ following the lifting of emergency regulations.
UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayewardena speaking at a press conference said the government should not stop at lifting the emergency regulations alone but work towards taking many more steps to prevent international pressure on the country. “Especially the government should express its stance on the political solution to the national problem,” he said.
“It is obvious that the government does not have one stance on the political solution as Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa says one thing about it and the other ministers say something different,” he added.
He said that the stance of the UNP was that the government should act honestly to establish democracy and the rule of law in the country. “Our party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed this opinion while appreciating the decision taken by the government to lift emergency regulations,” he added.
