Slavery under the guise of rehabilitation

The Midweek Lanka newspaper has revealed that suspected LTTE cadres who have undergone rehabilitation have been pushed into slavery under the guise of getting them involve din the government’s development programme.
The report quoting some former LTTE members who have undergone rehabilitation states that they are being used for construction work inside military camps and other sanitary work on a permanent basis in the Pallikudah, Pooneryn, Point Pedro and Maradankerni areas. The youth have complained that they were not even given a proper meal while taking their services and that they were suffering from ill health as a result.
Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera has said that about 8,000 young girls and boys who have undergone rehabilitation have been assigned for development work in the North and East and that about 850 of them are engaged in tank renovation projects.
