Signs of a military rule commencing in the country have been indicated by military orders being issued to state institutions instead from senior government officials, a senior government official told Lanka News Web.

One Major Ruwan Ehelepola from the Sri Lanka Army had ordered the public officials to attend the Hambantota City Development Meeting held in Defence Ministry on the 19th morning. The officer had given directions to the public officials that the meeting would commence at the given time and that every one should be at their seats before the meeting commenced. The officer had then given directions to the officials as to how they should act during the meeting.

The meetings had earlier been summoned by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa representing the Hambantota District. However, all district development programmes have been taken under Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

Meanwhile, the directives related to the widening of the Galle Road in Matara had also been made by an Army brigadier. The brigadier had warned the traders on Galle Road that they had to break their shops according to the directives issued and failure to do so within 24 hours would result in the shops being demolished using backhoes.

In such a backdrop, the businessmen have broken down their shops without even asking for compensation.
