Ban Ki-moon's committee decides there are issues to be probed under war crimes in Sri Lanka

2011-03-19

The committee appointed on Sri Lanka by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has decided that the UN needed to take necessary steps to probe the alleged violations of international humanitarian laws committed during the final stages of the war between the LTTE and the security forces as the committee has received evidence to show that such violations have indeed taken place during the period, reliable sources said.

The three member committee to probe into the alleged violations of international humanitarian laws was appointed by the UN secretary General in mid last year. The committee is scheduled to

hand over its report by the end of the month and it is learnt that the committee had received over 4,000 complaints.

Among those who have written are some individuals who have given eye witness accounts of the final stages of the war while being trapped in the cross fire. The committee has also received photographic and video evidence.

Sources from Europe said a copy of the report would be handed over to the Sri Lankan government and that pressure would be placed up on the government to implement the recommendations of the committee.

Members in the diplomatic circles are currently discussing the situation that could arise if Sri Lanka fails to implement the recommendations of the committee.
