The joint forum was considered a landmark political agreement because almost all Tamil political parties had lost many of their key members since they had fallen victim to LTTE terror
In a landmark political agreement, the hitherto reluctant Tamil National Alliance (TNA) joined hands with the Tamil Political Party Forum (TPPF) aimed at formulating a proposal that would be acceptable to all parties.
TPPF member and Leader of the PLOTE Dharmalingam Siddharthan yesterday said the TNA joining the Forum was a big boost and as it was well represented in Parliament. The TPPF has now has nine political parties and two civil organizations.
Siddharthan said "that finally a consensus was reached that a six member Sub-Committee consisting of three members, three from each the TNA and three from the rest would be nominated shortly to extensively deliberate on all aspects of the Tamil national problem before formulating the final proposal."
Political Sources said this joint forum was considered a landmark political agreement because almost all Tamil political parties had lost many of their key members since they had fallen victim to LTTE terror over the past three decades and all those political parties had failed to see eye to eye nor would they sit together in the past due to the undue influence and fear of LTTE.
The crucial meeting between the TNA and the rest was held at the Tamil National Alliance’s Colombo Headquarters, at Retreat Road, Bambalapitiya last Saturday evening, with MP Mavai Senathirajah coordinating the joint meeting in the absence of TNA Leader R. Sampanthan, now recuperating in India after treatment for a heart ailment.
TNA Media Spokesperson, MP Suresh Premachandran, said that the TNA delegation consisted of MPs Appathurai Vinayagamoorthy, M. A. Sumanthiran, Sivashakthi Ananthan, P.Selvarajah,T.Ariyanenthiran and,S.Vinoharalingam and the meeting was constructive and lasted for over two hours Premachandran said.
The two delegations primarily accepted the necessity for all Tamil political parties to speak in one voice on the Tamil national problem and further deliberated on important issues facing the Tamil people such as problems related to resettlement of the displaced, the Army’s occupation and construction of cantonments in the Vanni sector the military interference in civil administration in the North and East and day to day problems faced by the Tamil people.
The Tamil Political Party Forum (TPPF) delegation consisted of EPDP Leader Minister Douglas Devananda, TMVP leader and Chief Minister of the Eastern Province Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan, TULF Leader V. Anandasangari, the Chairperson of the Organization For Eelam Refugees Resettlement (OFERR) S. Chandrahasan, Leader of Tamil National Liberation Alliance (TNLA) leader of Sri-Telo Uthyarasa, leader of Naba Wing of EPRLF Sri Tharan.
TPPF member and PLOTE Leader Dharmalingam Siddharthan said that it was decided that the two sections, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Tamil Political Party Forum (TPPF) would meet shortly to nominate a six-member Sub Committee.
