Husbands - culprits in spread of AIDS
STDU Survey proves:

Health Authorities say that 80 percent of the female HIV victims have contracted the disease through their husbands. According to a recent survey conducted by the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Unit (STDU) there are around 5,000 HIV positive cases in the country but all of them were not detected. The actual number of AIDS patients found were minimal.

The first HIV positive case was detected in Sri Lanka in 1987. Since then a gradual spread of the disease could be observed.

The main cause for the spread of the viral disease was due to unsafe sexual patterns of people. Several cases of the virus passing from pregnant mothers to the foetus and deliverance of HIV infected infants were also reported.

Some infants have been found born with HIV positive.

There are over 47,000 women sex workers actively engaged in the trade, according to another survey conducted by the STDU.

Although prostitution and running of brothels are illegal in the country, the unlawful sex trade is widespread. It caters not only to local demand, but also associated with tourism according to local reports.

There is a possibility for HIV virus to transmit through unsafe blood transfusions, hypodermic needles not sterilised other than through unprotected sexual relationship.

The virus could remain in the human body for 12 to 15 years before becoming full-blown AIDS. A simple test could reveal whether he or she had HIV or not. News.lk Last Updated (Saturday, 02 October 2010)
