Racket to forcibly acquire land by intimidating Eastern Tamils

A senior officer at the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) told us that a racket is currently under way in the East with political backing to forcibly acquire land of Tamils in the area that are adjacent to the beach by intimidating them.
The officer said the CCD has managed to uncover an operation where lands of Tamil people near beaches in Batticaloa and Passikuda have been acquired at low prices by intimidating the owners and later sold at high prices to hotel developers.
He said a key person involved in this racket had been arrested by the CCD recently and that investigations have found him to have close links with deputy minister Susantha Punchinilame and former deputy minister Mervyn Silva. The security personnel of these ministers have been used to intimidate the Tamil people.
According to the CCD officer, the individual in CCD custody had further revealed of another racket of salvaging ships sunk in the Eastern seas with Defence Ministry approval to be sold as scrap iron.
