Boys 'abused' in Buddhist temple


Four boys are in hospital after being sexually abuse in a Buddhist temple
Three suspects, including a Buddhist monk, are missing after four under age boys were admitted to a hospital in eastern Sri Lanka with injuries, police said.
Assistant Superintendant of Police (ASP - Kantale), Mahinda Dissanayake told BBC Sandeshaya that a search operation is underway to arrest the suspects.

The suspects are missing since the parents of the abused boys lodged a complaint with the Serunuwara police, he said.

The boys, who were admitted to Seruvila hospital with serious injuries were later transferred to Trincomalee hospital.

500 child abuse cases

The mother of one of the boys told BBC Sandeshaya that her son was asked to come to the temple and asked to stay overnight to prepare forms for a charitable event.


There have been four boys and when they were abused one boy has run to the junior monk for help but the monk has asked the boy not to say anything to the parents

"A group of men has come to the room at night when the child was sleeping in the monks' quarters. There have been four boys and when they were abused one boy has run to the junior monk for help but the monk has asked the boy not to say anything to the parents," she said.

The mother added that all four boys have sustained injuries as a result of the sexual attack but her son was the one who sustained serious injuries.

The medical report says that they have sustained physical damage due to forceful sexual abuse.

More than 500 child abuse cases have been reported from over 420 government and privately maintained children’s homes around the country in the last six months alone, Department of Probation and Child Care Services (DPCCS) Commissioner, Sarath Abeygunawardana has told Daily Mirror online.
