Only insecure leaders need Emergency powers - SF
by Saman Indrajith
Colombo District DNA MP General (retd) Sarath Fonseka told Parliament yesterday that there was no need to extend the emergency regulations as Sri Lanka no longer faced threats to its sovereignty or defence.
He said: "We can now rule the country under the normal laws and give people relief. We have to do away with these laws to give relief to people."
Speaking during the debate to extend the state of Emergency by another month, Gen. Fonseka said that only an insecure leader would need extra laws to run a country.
"The provisions of Emergency regulations are abused to suppress political opponents and the media. I am also being held under such laws. When insecure rulers abuse laws, meant for emergencies, to rule countries during normal times, such administrations are abhorred by the rest of the world," he said.
