Most corrupt preferential vote counting
2010-04-15
Lanka News Web learns that the 2010 general election has recorded the most corrupt preferential vote counting in the country.
The first dishonest act was recorded in selecting the candidates of the two main parties.
In this whole exercise, it was only Basil Rajapaksa’s attempt to bring Kokila Gunawardena among those who have won in the governing party in the Gampaha District that failed.
It is also interesting to note that Chamal Rajapaksa who came seventh in the UPFA
Hambantota District list was finally elevated to the third position in the district and Gamini Lokuge who came 15th in the UPFA Colombo District list was elevated to the 10th slot in the list.
However, in order to increased Chamal’s preferential votes, an additional preferential vote had been cast in ballot pares that had a preferential vote only for Mahinda Amaraweera.
This robbery of preferential votes it is learnt had been conducted in the Hambantota District by marking an additional preferential vote for the President’s son Namal Rajapaksa in ballot papers that have cast a vote for the UPFA and had marked only one or two preferential votes.
It is also reported that while Champika Ranawaka was at the number two slot in the Colombo District list, Duminda Silva managed to get the slot by engaging in various gimmicks like Gamini Lokuge.
Meanwhile, it is also learnt that UNP Gampaha District member Sarathchandra Rajakaruna had offered his slot to UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasruiya to enter parliament. Jayasuriya, who was in the ninth position in the UNF Gampaha District list had managed to enter parliament after Rajakaruna had agreed to give up his place.
It is learnt that Jayasuriya may even give the slot in parliament back to Rajakaruna after about three years.
It is also learnt that although Pabha (Upeksha Swarnamali) was first in the UNF Gampaha Disyrict list, she was reduced to the second slot after making Ruwan Wijewardena first in the district after getting Jayasruiya to the third place.
