Matale UPFA MPs clash

Former Local Government and Provincial Council Minister Janaka Bandara says one of his UPFA colleagues, a newcomer to politics in the Matale District is responsible for violence in the district. An irate Bandara says a gang on the payroll of the newly elected politician on Friday mercilessly attacked H. M. Rupasinghe, a member of his parliamentary staff. "This is unfortunate," a spokesman for the former Minister told The Island yesterday, expressing concern that some UPFA MPs were causing mayhem.

Bandara said that a gang on the payroll of this particular politician was on the rampage targeting SLFPers, who steadfastly supported his campaign, though President Rajapaksa requested members to celebrate their victory peacefully.

He also accused the opposing camp of tarnishing his image in the run-up to the April 8 election.

According to him, his opponent distributed scurrilous leaflets ahead of the election and also used a section of the media to target him and portray him as a sinister character.(SF)
