DM appointed PM
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed one of the elder statesmen of his party as prime minister.
D.M. Jayaratne, a veteran politician in his 70s, newly sworn in as prime minister, must be a very happy man.
He recently said that “everyone” wanted him to be the next premier and that people in Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques and churches all over the island were invoking divine blessings to secure the post for him.
He has even said that he had a specially tailored suit ready for doing the job.
In an exclusive interview with Elmo Fernando of Sandesay, Jayaratna said “we need to have a new constitution that would enable all nationalities to live in peace and harmony” “
He said that he respects all religions and emphasised the need of providing oportunities for all nationalities to act as Sri Lankans.
The prime minister’s post is not a strong one in present-day Sri Lanka. President Rajapaksa is now all-powerful, boosted by a huge majority in parliament and in office until 2016 or possibly longer if he seeks to change the constitution.
The newly appointed Mr Jayaratne says he is not intending to serve much longer in politics. There is speculation that the president may appoint one of his own brothers as prime minister later this year.
