147 Army camps in the North and East
2010-03-15
The temporary Army camps and posts set up in the North and East and bordering areas, which should have been dismantled after the war, have been made permanent by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The declaration has been made through Gazette Extraordinary No. 1643/4 issued on March 1, 2010.
It has been declared that security forces headquarters, area headquarters for forward maintenance, brigades, forces, regiments and assisting regiments have been made permanent military installations. The President has also declared that the voluntary unit established in the Sri Lanka Army during the war be made
permanent.
East, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu have been declared as security forces headquarters and Welioya and Hambantota/Yala have been declared as area headquarters. Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu have also been declared as forward maintenance headquarters.
In addition, several regiments that were created during the war have also been made part of the permanent force. There are 46 forces and regiments that have been established as units of the voluntary force.
A former Army officer said that following the declaration, the Finance Ministry would make separate allocations for the maintenance of these units and financial provisions would be made to construct permanent buildings for the military installations.
Military Spokesperson Major General Prasad Samarasinghe said the Army camps and units were established during the war and since there have not been any military units in the North and East, they cannot be removed. Therefore, he said the military installations have been made permanent.
He also noted that people would be resettled in those areas after the establishment of these permanent installations and that it is state owned land that would be sued for this purpose.
