Hartley College, Methodist Girls School removed from security zone
The security zone in Point Pedro was shifted away from Hartley College and Methodist Girls School.
The two leading schools – Hartley College and Methodist Girls School located side by side in Point Pedro were taken out of the security zone. The Army has also vacated those school buildings, which it was occupying for years.
Sri Lankan Forces have shifted the security zone towards the Point Pedro Jetty excluding these two schools, the Urban Council Office and the Courts complex.
Earlier, Hartley College and Methodist Girls School came under the security zone in Point Pedro. The Sri Lankan Army was also occupying parts of the buildings of those two schools. The students were compelled to go through the check point daily before going to their respective schools.
Following the assurance given by the Minister of Education, who is also the General Secretary of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance, A.N.S. Thiruchelvam, the Secretary of the Methodist Girls College Development Committee in a statement to the Asian Tribune revealed that security forces had removed the two schools, the Court Complex and the Urban Council Office from the Security zone. He further said the school buildings occupied by the army had been freed and the Army check point too has been removed.
The statement further added that the Army had shifted the security zone towards the Point Pedro Jetty. He also added that parents, students and teachers were happy that those two schools were at last freed from all sort of controls.
He also said that moves to renovate the courts and Urban Council buildings were also now planned. (AT)
