Left Front Leader and Presidential candidate Wickremabahu Karunaratne told the media on Monday (14) that the statement made to The Sunday Leader newspaper by General Sarath Fonseka has confirmed that LTTE Leader Prabhakaran and other leaders like Pulidevan and Nadesan were killed after they surrendered to the Army.
He said that Fonseka’s statement had confirmed the stories that have been circulating for some time that the LTTE Leaders and their families surrendered to the Army with white flags following an agreement reached between the
UN and President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the leaders including Prabhakaran, Pulidevan and Nadesan were later killed by the Army.
He observed that Prabhakaran’s wife and daughter and Pulidevan’s wife and son have been killed in that manner.
Wickremabahu said the global super powers have already voiced their ideas of summoning persons responsible for such crimes before an international court of law to persecute action.
He said that Sri Lanka, which boasts of a history greater than the Greek civilization and that the likes of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa portrayed an image of war heroes even likening themselves to King Dutugemunu. However, he said that during the war between King Dutugemunu and King Elara, they agreed to a duel in order to prevent the massive loss of lives at war and King Elera agreed to it even though he is expected to have been about 70 years old at the time. King Dutugemunu after defeating King Elara treated him with respect and even asked people passing by his tomb to show their respect to the slain king.
Wickremabahu noted that Mahinda and Gotabhaya through their actions have disgraced the country’s history.
He added that the statement made by the government that General Fonseka’s comments were a betrayal of the nation were a further confirmation that the incident indeed took place.
According to him, General Fonseka after enjoying prominence as a war hero decided to reveal this information only after joining a new camp, but his actions have made him a war criminal as well.
Wickremabahu noted that in such a backdrop, neither General Fonseka nor President Rajapaksa had the right to contest at the Presidential election.
