GR/ US CITIZEN: Anybody could Murder Anyone! Making such a Statement by the DS/ GOSL who leads the 3 Defense forces & Police is a very Serious Matter!

Any citizen has the right to murder any other citizen says Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse.

Participating in an interview with ‘Lakbima Irida Sangrahaya’ to be issued tomorrow (13th) Mr. Rajapakse has made this observation when answering questions on non-party common candidate of the presidential election Gen. Sarath Fonseka.
Answering questions asked by journalist Namini Wijedasa of ‘Lakbima Irida Sangrahaya’ Mr. Rajapakse says Sarath Fonseka has displayed his hunger for power and selfishness by contesting the presidential election.
When ‘Lakbima’ journalist pointed out that anybody has the right to contest any election the Defense Secretary had said “yes, you have the right. You have the right to murder anyone.” Then the journalist had said murdering a person and contesting an election are two different things the Defense Secretary had said “Anybody has the right to do anything. That is another matter; but there should be justice.
What Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse says is, despite there are laws and regulations in the country, anybody could murder anyone and it is justifiable. Making such a statement by the person who leads the three defense forces and the police is a very serious matter and the effect it would have on the law and order situation in the country would be decisive.
Earlier, the Defense Secretary in an interview with a newspaper had said he was aware of information regarding the assassination of Chief Editor of ‘Sunday Leader’ Lasanthe Wickrematunga but he did not reveal it as it would have created a division in the Army. There was an outburst immediately after this statement but the government intervened and stopped it being a topic for dialogue in the society.

Talking of rights, what right a public servant has got to engage in open politics during election times. Can the Elections Commissioner look into this aspect under the powers held by him.
