The displaced persons who have been released from the Wanni IDP camps are reportedly being arrested by security forces when they are living with their relatives.

About 90 of Stage I and II from the transitional camp for IDPs in Pulmudai and about 90 youths from the Muttur transition camp have been arrested for having alleged links with the LTTE. They have reportedly been taken back to the IDP camp in Vavuniya by the Army.

A displaced woman who had come from Vavuniya and been staying with a relative had also been arrested by the Navy. Therefore, the IDPs who


are released are being re-arrested by the security forces. An official from the Human Rights Commission office in Trincomalee said that family members keep the office informed when the security forces take away a person and arrangements are then made to with the Army get the people transferred into police custody. The official said steps are taken to ensure that the rights of these people are protected at all times.

Resettlement a lie – Vasudeva

Presidential Advisor Vasudeva Nanayakkara says the displaced persons in the Wanni IDP camps have been placed in great difficulty through the resettlement programme as they a returned to their hometowns instead of their last place of residence. Vasudeva Nanayakkara made these comments following a visit to the north and observed that by returning these people to their original hometowns they have been left with no proper place to live in and carry out their livelihood.

According to Nanayakkara, the people in the camps have claimed they would return to their original hometowns and live with their friends and relatives in those areas and the government therefore is unable to do anything about it as well. He noted that these people could be resettled in the massive land area in the Wanni that is not being utilized by anyone.
